Guwahati, Feb 6: After the covid 19 lockdown when the whole world was on stand still, all sports facilities were closed and all major national and international sports events including Tokyo Olympics 2020 were postponed.
Assam inagurated the first major National Sports event the 36th Junior National Athletics Championships 2021 here at Sarusajai Stadium, Guwahati maintaining all covid protocols as per SOPs.
Chief Minister of Assam Shri Sarbananda Sonowal was presented in the inaugural program along with Mr Lakhya Konwar, President of Assam Athletic Association and Vice- President of Athletics Federation of India, Chief General manger of SBI, Chief Patron of the Championship Mr R.S. Ramesh, and prominent sportsstars Angkushita Bodo and Durga Bodo were also present.
Near about 1600 athletes & coaches from 32 teams will participate in the Championship in under 14, 16, 18 and 20 age groups in both Boys and Girls category in 100 events.
CM in his speech thanked Union Sports Minister Mr Kiren Rijiju and Chairman of Athletics Federation of India Mr A.J. Sumariwala for showing faith on Assam and allowing to organise the first major national sports after covid 19 outbreak in Guwahati. He also stated that Assam Government has been working tremendously to transform Guwahati into a Sports Capital of the country and also wishes to Organise World Junior Championship by 2023.
The 36th National Junior Athletics Championships will continue from 6th February to 10th February 2021, for next five days where all the best junior athletes of India will try to prove there talent.
