New Delhi, February 25 : India is hoping to get an invitation from organisers of Copa America , the South American football championship for the next edition after narrowly missing out on 2021 due to scheduling issues. AIFF (All India Football Federation) recived an invitation for this year, from Copa America organisiers but won't be able to make out as it is june. The Copa America was postponed last year due to the coronavirus pandemic and is scheduled to kick off on June 11. But AFC schedules the FIFA World Cup and AFC Asia Cup Qualifiers in March, April and June so two Asian invited countries have opted out of the tournament. Amazingly, India could have been one of the participants after being recommended by Australia as their replacement.
The decision to push the World Cup qualifiers to June means both Asian countries have now turned down the invitation. While Australia had made it clear quite a while ago, Qatar have also officially opted out.
Those in the know said the organisers are looking at the possibility of inviting two other teams and is very interested in getting India to replace Australia and Qatar.
It was a great opportunity for India to play in such a big tournament and competing among the world best South American teams and also a chance to play against the big football stars like Messi, Naymer, Suarez etc.
AIFF General Secretary is hoping to have the invitation by next season as South American Football confederation was very much interested in haveing India in the Championship this year. But this year India has to miss the opportunity because of the qualifiers schedule.
This edition of Copa America is due to be held in two countries for the first time in its 105-year history with Colombia and Argentina as hosts.
